Letter to Parents———May 14th, 2012
Dear Parents,
As my previous email announced , NCLS will have an artwork exhibit on May 20th, 2012. I have been preparing for this exhibit and have collected enough artwork from the students. We will have three poster boards standing on the table in the cafeteria on the next Sanday, May 20th. Please come to see your kids’ work.
Our students are the youngest kids in NCLS, but their artwork, by no means, is the modest or un- advanced. Their progress in the drawing and coloring surprised me, surprised their parents, and surprised their peers, too. Their ability to catch up the drawing skills, to mimic my drawing and coloring is enormous and unlimited. Four students followed my class for two semesters and they are totally familiar with my skills and they can vividly reproduce my teaching master painting without hesitation and shyness. I clearly remembered how they are doing at the beginning of this class and their growth makes me speechless. The other four kids joined the class in this semester and are obviously seeing the distance they have to catch. These four kids are really motivated and worked diligently in the class. Their improvement is huge. Let us give them some more time and I am sure that we will see the difference. I have posted in my blog a few of the artworks from a few of students and you are a judge.
I am happy to see them in my class and enjoyed to see their progress.
Best

Letter to Parents——April 11, 2012
Dear Parents,
Have you had a happy Easter Sunday? Some of the kids (students) told me that they would go to egg-hunting. Have you found eggs? It is a wonderful experience that we will talk about a little bit in the next class on Sunday April 22nd. Kids can draw using markers a face of whatever animals they like on the plastic eggs that I gave to them. This is a home work for the coming three weeks. It will be a fun. Besides, the ice cubes inside the plastic eggs are re-freezable. The kids can play with it by freezing and thawing several times. Of course, the ice cubes are eatable.and the inside liquid is a sweet drink.
After the Easter Sunday break, April 8th, we will have a spring vacation break which will be on the next Sunday April,15th. Spring is here and flower blossom is here. Side walks, parks, front yards, back yards, every where, are decorated with colorful, fresh and attractive flowers which give a spring smell and atmosphere to the people around them and which also create comfortable environment to release stress and regulate mood. It is also a good time to travel and some of students will travel to China with their parents. After the spring break, I hope that the students will load a fresh body, mind and spirit to challenge a new stage of Chinese school studies and drawings.
Supporting China education project in NCLS is also entering another level, i.e. sending students to Da Qiao zhong Xue, Si Chuang. They are our messenger to carry all the loving hearts, gifts and funds from all of us to China to support needed Chinese students to finish their schools and achieve their academic goals. Have a wonderful trip.
Have a good spring vacation!

Letter to Parents——Mar. 8th, 2012
Dear Parents,
Many thanks to all the people who responded my letters. Your comments are so positive and encouraging. I appreciated them and would like to give my gratitude to all of you! Your comments made up of the best part of my blog!
Continuing the last month topic——supporting education, I would like to bring up a NCLS project of supporting china education. A group of people including me organizes a few of activities each year to raise a fund to support Chinese students who have financial difficulties to pursue their academic achievements in China. This project also includes sending NCLS students to a high school in China to experience Chinese student life and teaching English in a Chinese school. I like this project. I came from China and joined the graduate school in USA after finished college in China. I experienced the difficult time periods during the school years. If someone can give a hand at the needed points, students with a bright potential would not be drowned in the family financial turmoils and would become a dependable backbone of society. Thinking of this, I have been a volunteer in the project group in the past two years and actively participated in all the fund-raising events such as talent shows, dance parties, yard sales and book fairs.
Currently in this month, the project group is organizing the following events:
March 10th, dance party, BC
March 18th, Yard Sale, NCLS
March 25th, Yard Sale, NCLS
I hope that all the teachers, parents, family members, and staff can be involved in these events. I distributed the paper copies of the yard sale announcement in January to parents in NCLS and the principal sent the announcement through email to school wide teachers, staff, and parents most recently.
Here is the Announcement of 2012 Yard Sale:

Letter to Parents——Feb. 6th, 2012
Dear Parents,
Welcome to our drawing class. The last Sunday class is our first class in the Spring semester, 2012. We have new students. I would like to remind that the students should prepare a drawing pad (sketch), a three-ring binder, a box of crayons, pencil and eraser. Next Sunday, we will draw and color butterflies and dolphins.
We just passed by the rabbit lunar year and get into a dragon year. I wish you a good luck in the dragon year! Celebrating Chinese New year involves a lot of activities. NCLS has in-school and out-school celebrations. I was also involved in one activity annually. I would like to share this with you. I was voluntarily invited to a Brookline public school to give a sort of lecture talking about Chinese New Year and Chinese brush painting. It is very much like our class section. In the first 15 minutes of one hour or so lecture, I talked the tradition of Chinese new year like decoration, greeting words, food, costumes, red-bag, and entertaining activities. In the second 15 minutes, I introduced Chinese brush painting and calligraphy by mentioning the ways, tools, material which Chinese brush painting uses. In the last 30 minutes, I demonstrated my Chinese brush painting skills by writing calligraphy and brush-painting a dragon. All these were fascinating their class of students who have not seen any brushing painting like this before(20 or so students, only two Chinese, still american-born). Three days later, I received the teacher’s thanks card and 20 or so pages of thanks notes each written by these 3rd grader students, saying that I am “one of the best artists they have ever seen” and how much they appreciate my cookies, red-bags, calligraphic greeting and painting I gave to them. I read through 20 or so pages of thanks-notes several times, I was really moved by their words. Their minds are so kind and eager to learn that I feel no matter how much I do to them is not enough. Supporting education can be done so easily and everywhere. This is my third year to do this. I hope that I will continue to do it.
祝龙年大吉!

Letter to Parents——Dec 30th, 2011, Happy New Year
Dear Parents,
Hope that you all had a merry Christmas!
All the students in my class wish to see the white Christmas, but it did not come true. Although I did see 5 minutes of the snow flakes flying in the sky on the Christmas Day, snow was not accumulated. The real snow flakes are as beautiful as what we drew in the class. No matter what, Santa Clause flew through all the families and dropped the gifts to all the kids as they wished. Even though Santa Clause is so busy and flew by so quickly that no one really saw him, his gifts are left in our kids’ mind for ever and for good. One parent gave a gift card to me and I looked it as a Santa’s gift to me to encourage me to work hard and to give more love to my students. Let me take this chance to say “Thank You!”.
If you as parents have time, please ask your kid how many times he/she saw the snow flakes, how many times the Christmas trees and wreaths, and how many times the picture of Santa Clause over this Christmas Holidays. We learned not only the drawing skills, but also the knowledge, tradition and culture of Christmas.
As drawing skills of our students are lifted up to a new level, time is also flying through and 2011 is coming to the end. I wish everyone have a prosperous and happy New Year! We will resume the class on Jan. 8th, 2012.
See you all in a new year 2012!

Letter to Parents——Dec. 5th, 2011
Dear Parents,
Happy Thanksgiving to all parents. One parent gave me a treat for Happy Thanksgiving and I appreciated it. I can not pick up more words than saying ‘Thank you”.
As we are walking into the holiday season, the holiday spirits are around us, around our class rooms, and around our drawings, too. To celebrate the holiday season ahead of us——Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, we will draw and color something s representing Christmas spirits and New year spirits. For an example, we have drawn snow flakes which brought all students into thinking of white Christmas. Next Sunday, we will draw and color a Christmas Tree and so on.
If you have any suggestions, please leave a note here or email to me.
Thanks,
Michelle Yu, Teacher

Letter to Parents ——Nov. 6th, 2011
Dear Parents,
A month passed by like a brink of eyes. Although there was one unexpected cancellation of the school because of snow, the students have still made one step up in the drawing and coloring. Balancing the facts that these young kids pay less attention to the detail and that they have more curiosity to the new things, I have increased the amount of drawing and coloring in the class. We draw and color two to three things in one section. Some students may not be able to finish them. It is fine to bring them home and continue to work on them.
Next class we will draw and color boats and rabbits.
Best,

Letter to Parents—-Oct 3rd, 2011
Dear Parents,
After four drawing classes so far, I noticed that the students have had great progress in drawing and coloring and are confident on free drawing and coloring. The students are more interested in drawing now. These are just initial progress, which is very precious. I am sure that the students will be more skillful in drawing in the next four classes.
Next class we will draw and color flowers.
Best

Letter to Parents——Sept. 20th, 2011
Dear Parents,
I would like to remind you of bringing a pack of crayons, drawing papers and a three ring binder. Last Sunday, we drew and colored ducks and bunnies. This Sunday, we are going to draw and color Dogs.
Our art class uses crayons as a tool to describe the world around us. We draw and color beautiful things around us. Kids will learn how to draw and color our favorite animals and flowers. Students will learn how to appreciate the beauty, color and kindness of the pictures we draw and feel the impact of colors. After this program, kids will master more skills of drawing and coloring and have more control of pens and hands.
Let us work together and we will make a difference.
Best,
Michelle Yu/郁晓梅
