I was very much surprised when Hongbin and Wenjie came to the class to present me with your generous gifts. I am sure I can find use of the gift card. Since my TA did not come up, I ended up with 3 bunches of flowers!

Thank you very much, it really brightened my day.

Today we talked about the final exam questions one by one. Some students did not do well with the tests. I think this helps parents and students to see which parts they are still lacking. For this test, I only chose questions from the books, with the same difficulty level as the homework they have been doing.

On the other end, I told the students that they should not be discouraged, that they will likely learn the same subjects again later at their regular school, and hopefully the 2nd time it will be easier for them.

For parents, please look at the student test and think about whether it is a good idea to let the students take Math 7A one more year.

For those who did the test at home, here is the answers:

School prefers us to have the final next week, since there will be a bunch of activities on the last school day on 6/23. As such, we have decided to move the final exam day to next Sunday 6/16/2013.

I won’ t have time to review with the students. Please have the student go over the homework from Chapter 8 to Chapter 14. Make sure they know how to do the questions in the homework.

This is the last teaching lesson for this semester, we finish off Chapter 14 for Algebraic Manipulations.

Today we talked about simplifying algebraic fractions, fractions whose numerator and denominator are both polynomials — such expression is called rational expression. We can eliminate the common factors. We talk about how to solve equations with algebraic fractions — such equation is called rational equation. One important thing to remember when solving a rational equation is that any solution cannot make any denominator zero.

We talk about identity equations where it is true for all values for the variable involved.

We will have a review next week, followed by a final exam in two weeks (last day of school).

We go over polynomial addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

For addition and subtraction, it is important to remember to combine the terms with the same degrees. For example, you cannot combine a 2x^2 term with 3x term.

For multiplication, remember to multiply every term in one polynomial with every term in the other, then add them all up.

For division, we use the vertical form to do the division. We talk about the relationship between the divident, the divisor, the quotient, and the remainder.

Chapter 14 homework: #1 – #17.
