Dear Parents,

Hope all had a nice spring break week!  This Sunday 4/26 is a snow make-up day, we will have class.

– NewtonServes Day is Coming!

This year, NewtonServes Day is May 3rd 1:00-4:00pm.  Same as previous years,  NCLS will partner with Day School and participate this meaningful community service event. Community members gather together at the school to complete projects for the school.  Below are some project ideas:

1. Rake up leaves/debris outside.

2. Clean up all the trash outside, especially trash that is technically off school grounds and on park grounds.

3. Mulch bushes.

4. Wash inside and outside of 1st floor windows.

5. Clear out the book room.

6. Clean up and prepare the courtyard plants for spring.

7. Post current maps of building (clearly indicating “You are here”) near stairwells and at major corners of building, on each floor.

8. Hide away construction materials/junk/debris under the archways on exterior of building near gym.

9. Dig out and level the long jump pit used for track and field. The wooden board is overgrown and nearly buried.  It needs to be dug out and raised and level.  The landing area needs to stretch out as a wide rectangle starting from the edge of the board.  The sand pit should be leveled.

10. Tighten the hurdles’ bolts.  They’re in the stairwell near the boys’ locker room.

11. Sand and paint 4 book cases in room 227.

1. Award list for 4/12 speech competition:

在4/12进行的2015年牛顿中文学校中文朗诵/演讲比赛低年级组的比赛中，一共有23名学生参与了这次活动，其中18名同学参加了朗诵比赛，5同学参加了演讲比赛。这是今年这次活动的最后一场比赛，也是最让人感动的一组参赛学生，他们当中最小的才只有5岁。但是年龄并未成为他们参加比赛的障碍，像前两组参赛学生一样，他们在演讲/朗诵舞台上展现给大家的是自信、勇气、坚持、以及对学习中文的热爱，让我们看到了未来在异国他乡传承中国文化后继有人的希望。因此，对所有参赛的同学来讲，因为他们的参与，所以他们个个都是赢家。 至此，低年级组的朗诵/演讲比赛已全部完成。在家长们的大力协助和同学们的积极参与下，这次比赛进行得非常顺利，在此我们也对各位家长给予的热情帮助表示衷心地感谢。比赛中，七位评委们对每位参赛学生依照比赛评分标准进行了认真，公平的计分。最后，根据每位学生的总得分决出了每组前三名获胜的学生，同时也决出了每组获得鼓励奖的同学。

The spring finally comes.  Our spring semester has already past half way.  We have a lot of activities going on at the school.  To give you a heads up, our fall registration will start in mid-May, please stay tuned.  We won’t have school on 4/19 due to spring break.  However, we do have class on 4/26 as a snow make-up day.

– Speech Competition:

1. Award list for 4/5 speech competition:

在4/5进行的2015年牛顿中文学校中文朗诵、演讲比赛高年级组的比赛中，一共有19名学生参与了这次活动，其中11名同学参加了朗诵比赛，8同学参加了演讲比赛。与以往一样，在这些同学中有的是重返赛场，也有的是今年第一次参加演讲比赛的新手。但不管是那一位同学，他们在演讲/朗诵舞台上展现给大家的是自信、勇气、坚持、以及对学习中文的热爱，让我们看到了未来在异国他乡传承中国文化后继有人的希望。因此，对所有参赛的同学来讲，因为他们的参与，所以他们个个都是赢家。

至 此，高年级组的比赛的比赛已全部完成。在家长们的大力协助和同学们的积极参与下，这次比赛进行得非常顺利，在此我们也对各位家长给予的热情帮助表示衷心地 感谢。比赛中，七位评委们对每位参赛学生依照比赛评分标准进行了认真，公平的计分。最后，根据每位学生的总得分决出了每组前三名获胜的学生，同时也决出了 每组获得鼓励奖的同学（因为演讲组有一半的同学因各种原因没能按计划参加比赛，所以学校根据实际参赛学生的人数对奖项名额做了调整）。

– Parent Teacher Forum

Last semester, our teacher Ms. Ruiyun Wang and Ms. Xiaodong Zhao hosted a parent forum regarding how to help children learn Chinese at home. The forum was geared to parents of K-3 grade students. Many parents joined the forum and had a wonderful discussion.

This semester, we will have the second forum hosted by these two experienced teachers. Here is the forum information:

Topic: 探讨怎样保持孩子的中文学习兴趣: 与三年级以上的孩子家长座谈

Time: 4/12 3:40-5pm         Location: Classroom 325

A previous NCLS principal, Ms. Ruiyun Wang 王瑞云老师 has been teaching at NCLS for 35 years and earned great reputation in Chinese teaching. She has also served in executive and leadership positions with the New England Chinese Teacher Workshop for eight years. Ms. Wang presently teaches at Brookline School Staff Children Center.

A previous NCLS board member, Ms. Xiaodong Zhao 赵肖东老师 earned her master in Early Childhood Education. She has been teaching Chinese at the top Private School Winsor School for over 15 years.

We welcome all parents to join this forum and hope we have another great discussion on how to help our kids to learn Chinese.

– Soccer Field

Last Sunday, Newton park and recreation staff found some parents have started playing soccer outdoors, but per Newton Park and Recreations requirement, they won’t open any soccer fields until next week (Even Newton Youth Soccer teams are not allowed to practice at this moment and the city is evaluating the field frequently).  It is because the grass needs to root before taking any stomps.  Please follow Newton city rule and wait until we are allowed to play soccer outdoors.

– Classroom Maintainence

After last Sunday’s school, NCLS received another complaint from Day Middle School reporting that things on the teacher’s desk were messed with.  Please remind your children, don’t touch any Day School teaching facilities unless the room teacher approved. If we continue to receive complaints from Day school, we may lose another classroom.  It will create huge negative effect for NCLS. Your effort will be greatly appreciated.

4．评审：评审组由本校七名非常有经验的中文任课老师组成。这些评委中的大部分老师在以往的演讲比赛中曾多次担任过评委，非常熟悉比赛规则及评分标准。每一位评委将本着公平、公正的态度，对所有参赛学生一视同仁，并按照《演讲及朗诵比赛评比规则》认真评审每一位参赛同学。

5．评比规则：新英格兰中文学校协会对今年的比赛规则做了修订，根据新的规定演讲比赛的评比将分为发音（2.5分），语调（2.5分），内容（2.5分），仪态（1.5分），和时间掌控（1分）等五项，总分为10分；朗诵比赛的评分将分为发音（3分），语调（3分），仪态（2.5分），和时间掌控（1.5分）等四项，总分为10分。按照比赛规则，每位参赛学生应该在规定的两分半到三分钟内完成演讲。对过时未完成或演讲时间低于两分半的学生，评委将根据规定扣除一定的分数。我们将除去七名评委中的最高分数和最低分数，剩下的五位评委的平均分数将是学生最后的总分。

另 外，我们还想特别就有关朗诵比赛的具体要求做个说明。根据新英格兰中文协会的规定，参加朗诵比赛的学生需要拿着稿件朗诵。考虑到此规定可能会对参赛学生造 成某些困惑，影响学生的正常发挥，经过和学校及某些评委老师商量后决定，我们将尊重参加校内朗诵比赛学生的选择，学生们可采用自己喜欢的方式朗诵，不需要 一定要拿着稿件朗读。但对选送去参加四月底新英格兰中文协会朗诵比赛的学生，必须遵守协会的比赛规则，即拿稿朗诵。

6．注意事项：在参赛学生演讲过程中，将有专人对学生的演讲时间进行提示。为了不打断学生的演讲，在演讲进行到二分半时，我们会通过用“声音鸣示”的方法提醒学生所剩余的时间。三分钟一到，会再用这种方法提醒学生“时间已到！”，但学生可继续其演讲直到完成。

7．奖项：演讲比赛和朗诵比赛各设一等奖一名，二等奖两名，三等奖三名，鼓励奖四名。另外，为了鼓励参赛学生学习中文的积极性和热情，所有参赛学生都将获得一个奖品。

请家长们根据比赛的分组名单认真核实一下您孩子的年龄和演讲题目（the list has been emailed to all parents）。依照新英格兰中文学会的标准，参加演讲比赛学生的年龄以5月15日为限；参加朗诵比赛学生的年龄以5月22日为限。如果您的孩子还没有朗诵题目，请尽快将题目决定下来并在本周日前通知我们。另外，如果您的孩子因某些特殊原因不能按照既定的顺序参加比赛，请您一定事先通知学校，我们将根据情况做适当的调整。

2015年牛顿中文学校校内演讲比赛报名已经结束。演讲比赛将于3/29日(中年级组，九到十一岁）, 4/5 日（高年级组，十二到十六岁）和 4/12日（低年级组，六到八岁）进行，希望所有报名参赛的同学们好好准备，争取取得优异的成绩。

-2015 Yard Sale at Cafeteria

The annual craft fair/yard sale will be held in NCLS first floor cafeteria on Sunday, March 22, 2015.  This year’s craft fair include a yard sale, bake sale and will add art exhibition.  The items are sold based on what you want to pay except those labeled with specific price.   All proceeds go to 2015 Support Education Program (支教).  Unsold items will go to local charities/churches. Business owners can register booths to conduct businesses at the yard sale(one day only). The registration fees will go to the Support Education Project, while business profits belong to owners. On 3/15, a student, also a performer from 学前班 乙班 Language, K Grade – B put her changed clothes (coat, sweater and pants) into her backpack and left her backpack at the 1st floor cafeteria. After she came back from performance, all her clothes were gone. If you took them by mistake or know somebody who took them, please contact us or drop the clothes at library.

Short introduction of topic: How to encourage middle school and high school students engage in the increasingly important STEM subjects?  Let’s hear what the experts have to say.  A national leader in gifted education, with a focus on fostering the genuine interest and developing creativity, is coming to Boston again this summer.  With the success of its flagship math contest oriented program Math Zoom in Boston College last year, Areteem Institute is bringing 8 camps in Math, Science, Humanities, and STEM Career Prospective to the students. Conceptual understanding, speed and accuracy, creative problem solving skills, and project oriented research in real world applications are stressed in their math and science programs. Creative reading, writing, research and analysis, and presentation skills are emphasized in their humanities tracks. The career tracks include a STEM career prospective and a Business Innovation track designed for the future super stars in entrepreneurship.

NCLS is pleased to host a seminar at our school to introduce the program to our families. Representatives from Areteem – Math Zoom will be flying in to present the program and answer your specific questions.  The summer program will be offered at Boston College, (along with UCLA and University Chicago), with both commuting and residential options. Scholarship discount code will be given out at the seminar.

Short introduction of speaker: Dr. Kevin Wang is a former IMO China Team member and former math faculty at UCLA and UCI. Dr. Wang and his faculty team consisting of IMO winners and coaches have been very effective in Math Olympiad training, and have produced numerous USAMO and IMO level winners. They specialize in identifying students who have limited math contest experience but with the potential, and training them from ground up and taking them to the highest achievement level.

Areteem Institute offers WASC accredited supplementary programs in math, science and humanities.  Credits received from attending their programs are possible to be accepted by your schools.

-Speech Competition

2015年牛顿中文学校校内演讲比赛将于本月22日及29日进行，学校已将有关这次比赛的报名通知发给了家长们。与往年不同的是，今年的比赛分为演讲比赛和朗诵比赛两个部分。参赛学生将按年龄分为低年级组（六到八岁），中年级组（九到十一岁），及高年级组（十二到十六岁）。为了让家长对两个比赛有更详细的了解，以帮助自己的孩子做出正确的选择，现对比赛做进一步的解释说明。1）参加演讲比赛的学生按新英格兰中文学校协会的规定，需依照主题《学中文》来选择和此相关的演讲内容。内容必须是原创，不得抄袭书报杂志或网路文章。参赛者需以记忆方式来进行演说，而不能看稿朗读；2）参加朗诵比赛的学生可根据自己的爱好选择诗词诗歌、故事、散文等，题材及体裁不限，内容不作为评分标准。参赛学生按规定需采用看稿朗读方式朗诵，但低年级组除外，即低年级组的学生可拿稿朗诵，但也可选择不拿稿。朗诵可加入手势或动作做辅助。演讲比赛和朗诵比赛的规定时间均为2分30秒到3分钟。

学校原定报名截止日为三月八日，考虑到二月份因下雪学校关闭了一天，学校决定将报名截止日延长到三月十五日。希望家长们鼓励自己的孩子积极报名参与，另外在填写朗诵比赛表格时一定将朗诵题目填写好，交到孩子所在班级的老师那里。待报名截止日结束后，学校将根据每组的报名人数决定比赛日期，并以电子邮件的方式将通知发送给家长。

天使舞蹈表演艺术学校建校14年，具有雄厚的专业师资及编导力量，培养了多批优秀的舞蹈艺术人才并成功地举办了几十场高质量的大型舞蹈演出。舞团近40名团员荣获义工奥巴马总统奖。并在2014全国舞蹈比赛中，34位8-17岁团员荣获前三名好成绩。严谨规范的教学作风，培养学生们的艺术美质，充分挖掘每一位学生的舞蹈潜能，通过系统的学习，从而成为一位优秀的舞者！

课程：基本功训练，芭蕾及舞蹈片断，爵士舞，现代舞及唱歌课

午间休息：舞蹈知识理论，舞蹈欣赏。室内乒乓和羽毛球 室外游玩活动等

舞蹈和唱歌课均以小班形式授课，一对一辅导并纠正。

Angel Performing Arts company and Angel Dance School will offer Dance workshops in Waltham, Lexington, Acton, Framingham and Sharon for your school age and preschool age children during the summer vacation. 

Our workshops will include basic and advanced classes in dances (e.g., ballet, jazz, and, Chinese/traditional), singing, and, Outing. Our experienced instructors and professional artists will teach your children both skills and knowledge.  Your children will improve confidence and self-esteem while having fun and making friends.  In addition, our dance program will offer solo, duet, and, group dance opportunities, as well as dress recitals followed by a party for your family and friends at the end of day. Dancers from the workshops could also perform at the Angel Performing Art’s well-known and successful dance productions and festivals in September.

The annual craft fair/yard sale will be held in NCLS on Sunday, March 22, 2015.  This year’s craft fair include a yard sale, bake sale and will add art exhibition.  The items are sold based on what you want to pay except those labeled with specific price.   All proceeds go to 2015 Support Education Program (支教).  Unsold items will go to local charities/churches.
Business owners can register booths to conduct businesses at the yard sale(one day only). The registration fees will go to the Support Education Project, while business profits belong to owners.

Speech Competition

Our annual Speech Competition is around the corner.  Please read the following competition description carefully as the competition format has been revised from previous years.

今年的比赛分为演讲比赛和朗诵比赛两部分。根据美东中文学会(ACS)和新英格兰中文学会(NEACS)的规定，参加演讲比赛的稿件必须是根据学会规定的题目自己所写。今年的主题为《学中文》； 朗诵比赛可 选用他人的作品。所有比赛的时间在2:30 到3:00 之间。任何低于或超过这个时间都将被扣除一定的分数。校内比赛报名截止日为3月8日。比赛日期目前定于3月22，29日两日。如果报名人数较多4月5日宜 可作为比赛日。学校将选出7名具有丰富教学经验的中文课老师组成比赛裁判组。有关比赛的具体事宜学校会在报名截止后通知参赛学生的家长

Please note that in the future, all ACS speech competition only have 演讲比赛, no 朗诵比赛.  However, NEACS will still have both.

Same as previous years, the competition will be separated into age groups:
