AOPS Algebra Course, Lesson 6, 10/13/2019

Today, students continued to work on Algebra 1, the linear equations. Students understand what the linear expressions, linear equations are. The solutions to one-variable linear equations are one solution, no solution and infinite solutions. In addition, students learned the procedure of dealing with word problem, such as setting variable(s), writing expressions, writing equation, and solving equation.
Here is the homework for today’s class:
P.82, 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 3.1.4
P.88, 3.2.1, 3.2.2, 3.2.3
P.92, 3.3.1

Singapore Math 8th Class, Lesson 6, 10/13/2019

In today’s class, students studied expansions of Algebraic expression, especially the method of handling “sign” in algebraic expressions. A few special products were introduced that are so important in the quadratic expression section. By using those special products, we are able to compute some type of numbers without calculator. In addition, reverse applications of those special products are helpful in the factorization of certain types of algebraic expressions, such as some quadratic expression factorization. Limited class practices should be good guidance for students to deal with more questions.

Here is the homework assignment for the contents that students studied today.

AOPS Algebra Course, Lesson 5, 10/06/2019

In the new content section, students learned algebraic fractions, simplification of algebraic fractions, addition, subtraction. The key to implement simplification is factoring the expressions of numerator and denominator correctly, and cancellation can be only done in the form of factors; In the addition/subtraction of fractions-making a single fraction, finding least common denominator is critical.
The homework for the contents above:
P.73, 2.4.1, 2.4.3, 2.4.4, 2.4.5, 2.4.6
P.118, 4.4.1, 4.4.2, 4.4.3, 4.4.4

Singapore Math 8th Class, Lesson 2, 9/15/2019

Today, students continued to work on exponent computation and
simplification, especially with fractional exponents. Simply
speaking, all laws of exponents that were introduced to students
last week are also valid for the fractional exponent. Most
importantly, the relation of radical number and expression and
fractional exponents is the explanation of the meaning of fractional
exponents.

Solving exponent equation by using the idea of "the same base" was
the good practice in exponent contents. Students learned to solve
different type of simple same base exponent equations.

Additionally, students learned how to use scientific notation to
present very big numbers or very small numbers.

Here is the homework assignment:

Workbook 8A
Chapter 1
2. (a) (b) (c) (d) (h)
4. (c) (h)
5. 6.
7. (b) (c) (d) (f) (h)
8. (a) (d) (f) (h)

Optional: (challenging)
16. (d), 17; (c) (e); 18. (e)

AOPS Algebra Lesson 2, 9/15/2019

Today, students continued to study laws of exponents with fraction exponents. All laws of exponents introduced for the case of integer exponents are also valid for fractional exponents. Additionally, radical numbers and the relation with fractional exponents were described and examples were presented to students for further understanding of the concepts and applications in computation and simplifications in radical, fractional exponent forms.
Students are required to memorize the laws of exponents, which would be benefit to their math studying, especially in algebra.
The homework assigned for today’s contents:
PP.41, 1.7.1; 1.7.2; 1.7.3 (a) (d); 1.7.5 (a) (b) (c);
PP.48, 1.8.1 (a) (b) (d) (e) (f); 1.8.2;

AOPS Algebra 1, Lesson 1, 9/8/2019

In the first class, we reviewed the basics, including number tree, order of operation, commutative, associative, distributive property, and factoring, equation, exponent. The exponent is very important knowledge and will be used in Algebra studying.

In exponent section, we started with the integer exponents. The law of exponents, the core of exponent, were reviewed in the class. It is more effective to memorize those laws.

Singapore Math 8th Class, Lesson 1, 9/8/2019

In the first class, students worked on exponent and related computation/simplification. Today’s class is shorter because of the distribution of workbooks. The integer exponent was the first topic that students started with. During the introduction of exponent laws, students learned how to apply these laws in the application of algebraic expressions, and how to avoid some common problems in solving exponent questions. In order to handle such important topic without problems, memorizing the “Laws of exponents” is the key. In addition, doing more practices is so important.
