Title of the topic: Give a Child you love a Unique Gift

Short introduction of topic:

For many, the American Dream means that each generation will do better than the last. You can help fulfill that dream by giving your child a financial leg up with a permanent cash value life insurance policy which can be designed to help them pay for college, buy their first home, or start planning for their retirement – even before they start working. While gifts of toys and clothes are quickly outgrown, a whole life policy grows as your grandchild grows, giving them a head start towards a successful financial future. Welcome to the workshop to see how great the gift is for your child. The workshop will be held in Chinese.

Neil Chyten

Title of the topic:
The New Role of Standardized Tests in Admission to America’s Elite Universities

Short introduction of topic:
The role of standardized tests in college admissions is changing.  While some colleges are going “test optional,” others rely more than ever on the scores, subscores, and writing samples they receive from the testing agencies. While some colleges give you the option of sending scores or not, no college will reject scores if you send them. Thus, sending high test scores to test-optional schools can provide you with a significant competitive advantage.  It is also important to understand the other factors that are highly significant in earning admissions into competitive colleges across America.  College admissions and testing expert Neil Chyten comes to NCLS on Sunday, November 8 at 3:45 to discuss these and other factors that can help your child earn admission to America’s elite colleges.

Short introduction of speaker:
Neil Chyten began tutoring in 1984. In 1999, he opened the first Chyten Educational Services Center in Newton Massachusetts. His philosophy as a tutor is the same as it is as a business owner, you should only expect 100% of others if you give 100% of yourself. Since 1984, Neil has written several study manuals and teachers guides. These are the books used by Chyten’s tutors and Education Centers nationwide. He has had the pleasure of training literally thousands of students and hundreds of tutors. His goal is to build the best private education company in America.

-Newton Ward 2 Alderman-At-Large Election Debate & PVSA Ceremony

2015 Newton Ward 2 Alderman-At-Large Election Debate was held at the school’s auditorium on Oct. 25 from 2:00-3:30pm, followed by President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) ceremony. All four ward 2 alderman-at-large candidates participated in this debate including two current aldermen-at –large and two challengers. NCLS’s chairman of the board, Dr. Yongqi Deng welcomed the aldermen and encouraged the community to register and vote on Nov. 3rd, making the voice of the Chinese community to be heard more.  The Vice Principal Xia moderated the debate. Six Newton aldermen or alderman candidates from multiple wards joined the audience to listen to debate.

Short speeches by Anping Shen, 1ST chairman of the board of NCLS, and Leland Cheung, Cambridge city councilor, kicked off the event. They supported our community member Wenhua Zhang to be elected as Newton Charter Commission and inspired the community to vote for him.

After the debate, Principal Lai hosted the President’s Volunteer Service Award ceremony from 3:30-3:45. It was a historical moment in the history of NCLS, as the first ever awards issued by President Obama to our community. All the aldermen and alderman candidates participated in presenting the awards to the 12 PVSA student winners.

Then, most aldermen and alderman candidates took a tour of NCLS guided by the school admin. They were surprised with the scale and completeness of our school’s operation.

In recent years, residents of ward 2, where Day School is located, has continued sending complaints to the city about the parking behavior and traffic by our school members.  The ward 2 aldermen are responsible to solve these issues and have communicated with us in the last couple of years. We hope this event will help improve the mutual understanding between aldermen and NCLS to an even higher level, and help the members of our community further understand the importance of registering and voting as a citizen, and go ahead to vote for their interest with goodwill on November 3rd.

Dear Parents:

There are a couple of important events that will be happening this Sunday:

-Ward 2 Election Forum

With the development of NCLS, school has become one of the largest non-profit organizations in Newton. At the same time, it also bring a lot of inconvenience to the local communities, such as parking issues, etc. To solve this or other potential issues, Ward 2 Alderman will play a significant bridge role between school and our neighbors. Therefore, NCLS decided to host Newton Ward 2 Alderman Election forum this coming Sunday, to create an opportunity for NCLS parents to listen and speak out what you are caring. The forum is on October 25, from 2:30 to 3:30 pm in the auditorium. Four alderman at large candidates, plus Emily Norton, who is the current alderwoman, will come to our school. Our vice principal Ming will moderate the forum. Bellow please find the background information of these candidates. Also, Wenhua Zhang, a parent of NCLS, who is running for Newton Charter Commission this year, will meet our parents and answer their questions from 2:15 to 2:30 pm.

This is a very important event. All parents are strongly encouraged to attend this Forum to show your support to NCLS and Chinese community. Your participation will be highly appreciated.

Dear Parents:

We don’t have school this coming Sunday (Oct  11, 2015) due to Columbus Day. Wish everybody have a relax weekend. The school will resume on Oct 18, 2015.

-Fire Drill

This past Sunday, we successfully finished our annual fire drill. Thanks a lot for PCC, school admin team, and teachers/TAs  for all of your hard work and cooperation. The whole building was emptied less than five minutes which meets the requirements of Newton fire department. However, there are a couple of  important things that need to be improved:

1. After all people exited the building, there are still a lot of people stood near the building doors instead of walking far away from building as quickly as possible, made the other people difficult to move out quickly.

2. The main entrance driveway is not clear. The majority of parents just stood on the main entrance (driveway) that will make other people difficult to move forward, and even worse, that may cause the fire trucks difficult to drive in.

The purpose of the fire drill is let everybody get familiar with the general emergence evacuation process, strengthen the urgent feeling, know where to go if something happens in the building. The prevention of potential disaster and keep the safety of our community is always the school’s top priority.

-Registration

The registration will be closed on 10/12/2015 midnight. If you have not paid the tuition by this date, please pay it online asap, otherwise, the extra fee will be added to your account.

Community News

-Election

With the incoming of various local elections, the candidates within school district are actively approaching NCLS and want to introduce themselves to school community. Here is one candidate, Wenhua Zhang, also NCLS parent, who is going to campaign for Newton Charter Commission. Below is his campaign introduction.

请访问我的网站 wenhuazhang.com 了解详细信息。

My name is Wenhua Zhang. I am a parent of Newton Public School student.

What is Charter Commission?

The Newton Charter is like our city’s constitution. On November 3, Newton voters will vote for 9 people to serve on a 2-year commission to review our city Charter. The changes proposed by the commission must be approved by voters in November of 2017.

Why are you running?

I add diversity to the Commission, and I come with an open mind to listen to voters. According to The Census Bureau, more than 1 out of 8 residents in Newton are Asian, which is also the fastest growth group in the Garden City. I volunteer in the Asian community at Newton Chinese Language School.

What is your background?

I came to the United States from China at the age of 23. I had no money, but this nation gave me a chance to prove myself. I went to the Wharton School to get my MBA degree, then worked for several investment funds and one university – Harvard Management Company where I served as Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager. Now I want to give back to the city that has been so good to me and to my children. Please visit my website wenhuazhang.com for details.

What is your plan to work on the Commission?

I will approach the Charter Commission as I have approached every project in finance: with close scrutiny to facts and to data with no pre-conceived notions. I will be as studious and analytical as I was when investing on behalf of pension funds and university. Some of the issues that I believe deserve rigorous research and deliberation include: 1) Whether to downsize the Board from 24 members to a smaller number. There is evidence to suggest that downsizing may increase the efficiency of government, but we need to examine second-order effects carefully. 2) Whether to term-limit aldermen in accordance with the School Committee’s policy of eight-year terms. 3) Whether to lengthen aldermanic terms and stagger their elections so that Newton voters are not asked to remember dozens of candidates every two years. 4) Whether to professionalize the zoning and land use functions so that technocrats, not politicians, are making expert assessments. Please let me know your thoughts on my website wenhuazhang.com. I will analyze these issues methodically and debate them collegially. I am proud to offer my time and expertise to the Garden City and I ask for your vote on November 3rd.

Thanks

Li and Ming
