A special note for teachers in 《马立平教材》classes– please email your students/parents this week to let them make the tuition payments including the book cost of $60 by the end of next week 6/10/12. School has made the book order for 《马立平教材》，and will distribute it to students who have paid their tuition and books in this semester.

Invited Speakers：

Kay Khan: The city of Newton’s longest-serving state representative, who is the Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities.  She has been a leading voice for affordable and compassionate health care, mental health, public education, global education and human services, among other causes.  She lives in West Newton, so F. Day Middle School is in her constituency.

Maria Meyer: a veteran social and mental health professional and an adjunct professor of Boston U. School of Social Work.  For the past decade, she was Director of Outreach Services and Coordinator of Boston University/Chelsea Public Schools Social Work Program.  She is licensed clinical social worker and school adjustment counselor.

All interested parents are warmly welcome to this open parenting class.  Both speakers will make a 20 minutes presentation, which will then be followed by questions and answers.

Dear teachers:

To reward student teaching assistants with exellent performance, NCLS plan to give “Excellent TA” award to a group of selected TAs to recognize their outstanding service at the year end PCC assembly, inconjunction with graduation ceremony. All candidates need to be nominated by their teachers. NCLS admin is going to form a committee and make the final selection.

Following criteria should be considered when nominating a candidate:

1. Is this TA always helpful for the teacher?

2. Is this TA always helpful for the students?

3. Knowledge about the class

4. Prepareness of the class

5. Sense of responsibility

6. Always on time

7. Has made no more than two absence requests for the school year

        Registration is now OPEN for The 21st New England Chinese Language Teacher Network Conference at UMASS Boston on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 9:00am-3:00pm We have taken advice from previous evaluations for the three focused topics of the Spring Conference: 1.  Dear Teachers:

        We all understand that we have other calls in life and we sometimes have to take absence from our jobs at the school. But, many of us have rarely missed a class for the past three years. It doesn’t mean we have never had needs to be absent; it means we have gone above and beyond to make it to the jobs at NCLS. Salute to all of us, we are a strong teaching force, and we are making another successful school year at NCLS.

        The registration for the Fall has been under construction. There are some new classes being added in the Fall semester. The existing course listed with the new additions will be posted before the registration begins. You will see teachers names are on the list as-is for now, before the teaching assignments being finalized. Please stay tuned for the updates.

We are looking for Mandarin speaking teachers for a new Mandarin
Immersion Preschool in Brookline.  We anticipate having full-time and
part-time positions available.  Full-time positions are Mon-Fri, about
45 hours/wk (for example 9am-6pm) throughout the year.  Part-time
positions will be about 30 hours/wk (for example 7am-1pm).  Salary
will be highly competitive ($12-15/hr, based on experience) for the
Boston area.

Our philosophy is that young children learn best through interactive
experience and immersion.  Children will not be expected to do rote
memorization as was the traditional Chinese method, but instead
through full immersion with Chinese speaking teachers we believe they
will pick up the language and culture naturally because it is their
instinct.  We want to create a personal, creative, safe and nurturing
environment in which children, guided and encouraged by their
teachers, can delight in growing and learning.  Our goal is to help
develop responsible, self-confident, healthy, happy, and successful
children.

Teachers should be certified by the Department of Early Education and
Care as Teachers or Lead Teachers.  The state licensing qualifications
are as follows:

TEACHER:
3 credits in Child Development
9 months of work experience in a Child Care program.

LEAD TEACHER (Teacher requirements plus):
9 credits in Early Childhood Education
36 months of experience if you have a High School diploma.
27 months of experience if you have a Certificate.
18 months of experience if you have an Associate degree.
9 months of experience if you have a Bachelor degree.

More importantly, teachers should have a joy for teaching young
children and a desire to spread an appreciation for Chinese culture
and language to children of all backgrounds.

Dear Teachers,

        It was very nice to get together again at NCLS last Sunday after the spring break. Teachers, TAs and the parents were very happy to catch up with each other; the school has been filled with enthusiastic and warmth of friendship. NCLS is a big family to us all. 

        Here are the notes for this week:

        Classroom time:

        Some young students had “finished” their classroom works early last Sunday, and started running around in the school building before the class period was over. Please make sure that your students have enough classroom learning activity to do and stay inside the classroom before the session period is over. The first period is 2:00pm to 3:30pm, the second period is 3:40pm to 5:00pm. 

       Conference/Training announcement:

Dear Teachers:

        Welcome back! Hope you have had some time to relax during the spring break, we have all been working so hard! 

        Our school resumes on Sunday. Please allow yourself enough time to arrive in your classroom 10 minutes before the class starts. Some parents have complained to school about teachers’ being late for classes. Being on time is the fundamental requirement and responsibility for us all. Please make sure to follow through on this matter.

Dear Teachers,

        The mid-term exam for 《中文》classes went well last week. As it’s approaching the second half of the semester, we need to keep reminding our students for good classroom behavior and positive discipline. Thank you for your continuous hard work at NCLS.

        Last week 王瑞云老师 has given us a teaching demo in her classroom. 王老师 recently had medical emergency; but she is so much devoted to our school and her students, she came back to her classroom one week after her emergency treatment. Her dedication to the school and her enthusiasm to teaching are highly appreciated.  We have also made video record for  李剑文老师 last week. Shady Hill School

For over nine decades, Shady Hill, a school of 510 students (Pre-K-8) and seventy-five full- and part-time teachers, has been a leader in progressive elementary education. Specific Responsibilities:

-Teach seventh and eighth grade Mandarin
-Monitor the social, emotional and academic lives of students
-Communicate about student progress, write reports, hold parent conferences, and meet with administrators to support the needs of individuals
-Work collaboratively with other members of the language department to shape and refine the curriculum
-Document curriculum using curriculum mapping software
-Serve as a community member by attending weekly faculty meetings, sitting on committees, participating in admissions activities, and assuming coverage duties

Qualifications:

-Masters degree and prior teaching experience preferred
-Strong background in language curriculum design, including a project-based approach
-Familiarity with integrated learning through a thematic approach
-Demonstrated commitment to multicultural practices
-An understanding of Chinese Culture
-A keen interest in pursuing professional development opportunities

Finalists are expected to teach a demonstration lesson. A writing sample and transcripts are also required.

Shady Hill has a 25-year salary scale with a range from $49,551 to $86,246. The median salary for the 2012-13 year is $72,175.

 Dear teachers and teaching assistants:

Last Saturday we had an internal teacher training at CCCC. We want to thank all the speakers who gave us a very productive night. The feedbacks were very positive and many teachers told us that they have learned a lot, from both educational theory to practical methods. We are also pleased to see the practices we are taking at NCLS, such as teacher blog, teaching video and teacher evaluation, are in line with the mainstream teaching methods. We want to thank all teachers who attended the training and as we mentioned, all teachers will be compensated with the time you spent on Saturday evening and the compensation will be included in you March salary.
