Letter to NCLS Teachers on 3-Oct-2013

Dear Teachers,

Last Sunday we had a very smooth and successful fire drill. The whole process, starting from fire alarm sound till the last person out of the building, took only six minutes.  Thanks to all teachers who led the class in an orderly and disciplined manner. As you all know, safety is the top priority in our school operation.

As the school is back to its regular school routine, here is a reminder that all teachers are required to notify the School Dean, Xiaoyan Li ahead of time if you are absent from teaching.  This is to ensure the teaching quality and make proper arrangement for substitute teacher or teaching assistant.  This policy is applicable to all teachers regardless of seniority. If you have any questions on this, please talk to the principals directly.

Last Sunday we distributed a updated class student list to all teachers.  Please use it to check with your class.  If you notice any students are missing classes or aren’t on the list, please let us know.

This week’s school newsletter covers:
1) Last week’s fire drill summary
2) Ma Liping Curriculum Information Session for all Parents
3) Announcement from NCLS Support Education Program
4) NCLS First Adult Tennis Tournament for Support Education Program
5) Talent show fundraising event on November 3rd
6) Seminar:  Maximizing College Financial Aid Eligibility

See you all on Sunday,

Letter to NCLS Teachers on 26-Sep-2013

Dear Teachers,

Hope you had a good start of the school year!

In this week’s newsletter, we would like to inform you an incident that happened during last Sunday’s school time. This incident brought up a high level of safety alert to us and we want to make sure that all teachers are aware that safety is the top priority of our school operation.

During last Sunday’s first class period, a six year old student was left behind in the bathroom during the bathroom break time.   The student could not find the way back to the classroom and subsequently got lost in the building.  Finally he was found crying on 2nd floor by a parent on duty and brought to the library.  Meanwhile, the classroom teacher and TA had never noticed the missing of the student, even though the student’s backpack and books were left in the classroom all the time.  The incident caused the rage of the parent and our attention to the safety practice in the school.

As you all know, safety is our school’s biggest liability and we do not tolerate any unsafe practice at NCLS.   This incident is surely a lesson for the classroom teacher and TA.  We hope it bring all teachers’ attention to the safety matters,  therefore we can avoid any such incident happen in the future.

To ensure we have a safe learning environment, we want to remind all teachers to do the following:

1. Starting this coming Sunday, all teachers should take rosters(点名)based on the updated student list in the system.  If you have trouble print out the student list, please let us know, we will print out for you.  Teacher should know how many students in his/her class and get to know the student faces.

2. If the teacher or TA takes children to bathroom or give students a break, please make sure that ALL students return to the classroom afterwards.

3. If you have any safety concerns or noticed any issues, please inform our school admin immediately.  We need to resolve those issues as quickly as possible.

In this weeks newsletter to parents, we also remind the parents that they need to inform the teacher if the student would be absent from the class.  We want to make sure that they are in safe hands if they are not in NCLS classroom.

We also will email all TAs regarding the safety issue.  TAs should take active role in bathroom break and class release.

Lastly, this Sunday, please have a talk with your students regarding bathroom use.  We have received a complaint from Day school that the bathroom use by NCLS was unacceptable.  In both men and women bathrooms, the toilet paper and paper towel were thrown in wrong places, urine was on the floor.   All of these made the cleaning job very difficult and also created an unhealthy environment for our students.  Please let all students know that we should treat the Day school property with respect.  We should show our NCLS spirit of kind and consideration.

Last reminder that we will have a fire drill at 2:30pm this Sunday.  Note that the designated gathering place is behind the building: http://newtonchineseschool.org/evacation.php

See you all this Sunday.

Guangsong and Ling

Letter to NCLS Teachers on 19-Sep-2013

Dear Teachers,

Hope you all have a nice Mid-Autumn Festival.  In this traditional holiday time, we want to thank your family for the support of your work and our NCLS community.  We wish you all have a sweet holiday time!

For the past week, we received a few classroom complaints from Day school.  Two regarding moving of table and chairs and not putting back and one regarding sink use in the classroom and spilled out water on carpet and floor.  Together with the complaints from Day teachers in the first week, it has brought to Day’s Principal’s highest alert level now.  A detailed review of these issues also convinced us that all of these issues are preventable. Therefore, we want to reiterate our classroom management practice here:

1. Try not to move the tables and chairs if you don’t have to.  If you have to, please take a picture of the classroom before you move and make sure you put them back into the original spot.  You can take another picture afterwards for your own proof.

2. Proper communication set up between 1st class teacher and 2nd class teacher.  If you are the 1st class teacher and have any change to the classroom, please make sure to communicate the change to the 2nd class teacher.

3.  For teachers who have labs as classroom, please make sure students not to touch the lab equipment.  For art classes, if you need to use the sink, please make sure not to let water running afterwards and clean up any spilled water outside the sink.

4. Please communicate any concern or classroom issue immediately to Li Guanghua Laoshi, our classroom Manager, so we can resolve them quickly.

As you know, classroom management is always on the top list of our school administration.  We thank you for your attention to this matter and cooperation.

See you all this Sunday.

Letter to NCLS Teachers on 12-Sep-2013

Dear Teachers,

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

We had a fantastic school Day last Sunday!  It was busy, but very smooth.  Thanks to all teachers who worked so hard to get ready for the first class.  Surely the school admin staff worked tirelessly to prepare for the school opening.

Regarding classroom management, we received very positive feedback from Day school teachers after receiving our letter and a box of tissue and markers.  Last week, most of the first floor and second floor classrooms received the letter,  tissue and markers.  This week, we will distribute them to the rest of the classrooms.

During the first week, we did have one issue regarding the Smart Board in the classroom. For teachers who have Smart Board in their classroom, this is not a regular white board, so you cannot use markers to write on it.  It’s like a screen and only special pens can write.  If by accident you wrote on it, please have your TA come to the library immediately so we can provide a special solution to wash it. A rule of thumb: if you notice something is wrong with the classroom, you or your TA take a picture and notify the admin team immediately.

As the first week went by, please log in the school system to check your updated class list, because there could be students withdraw or added to your class since the last time we print out the list for you at the teacher’s meeting.  Please let us know if any student in your class is not on the class list.

A few other notes:

1. Please go to Xu Hua in the library to pick up the moon cake

2. The updated Reimbursement Form and W9 Form link is on our school website:  https://www.newtonchineseschool.org/forms.php

3. This coming Sunday 9/15 is Book Sales Day.  The book sales run from 9:00am to 5:00pm at the cafeteria.

See you all this coming Sunday.
