Summary of October 16 Chemistry SAT class and homework

For the student who missed the class, you must complete Chapter 2 Review Questions on page 56 to 57, Question #9 through #14.

Chapter 2

Question #9 (page 56):

Derive relationship:  Density  MW (gas molecular weight) at STP

……..

Density  =  Mass / Volume,  PV=nRT,   n = Mass / MW

PV=nRT   →  n/V = P/RT

n/V =  (Mass / MW ) * (1/V ) =  (Mass / V)  *  (1/MW ) = Density / MW

n/V = P/RT  = Density / MW

Density = (P/RT ) * (MW)

For all five gases, the P and T are the same, i.e. (P/RT ) is a constant, at STP (273.15 K; 1 atm or 760 Torr),

Density  MW           (P/RT ) is a proportionality constant in this case

Question #10 (page 57):

Using relationship: V = nR  * (T) * (1/P)            (from PV=nRT)

V ↓, when T ↓,

V ↓,   when P↑, i.e. (1/P)↓,

Question #13  (page 57):

Try using elimination method
