For a given vector a<\/strong>, a vector which has the same magnitude but in the opposite direction of a is called the negative of vector a<\/strong> , and is denoted by \u2013a<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The subtraction of a vector v<\/strong> from a vector u<\/strong> can be denoted as adding the vector \u2013v<\/strong> to u<\/strong>: u<\/strong> \u2013 v<\/strong> = u<\/strong> + (-v<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A vector with the same initial point and the terminal point has zero \nmagnitude. It is called a zero vector, or a null vector, and is denoted \nby 0<\/strong>. a<\/strong> + (-a<\/strong>) = a<\/strong>  \u2013 a<\/strong> = 0<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a vector a<\/strong> is multiplied by a constant k, the product ka<\/strong> is called a scalar multiplication of a<\/strong> and is defined as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

* If k > 0, ka<\/strong> is a vector with magnitude k|a<\/strong>| and in the same direction as a<\/strong>;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

* If k < 0, ka<\/strong> is a vector with magnitude -k|a<\/strong>| and in the opposite direction of a<\/strong>;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

* If k = 0, ka<\/strong> is a zero vector 0<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
