Update from May 13 class

Dear Parents and Students
Today, we went over the following topics
1. How to name an angle
2. What is corresponding angle, how to identify corresponding angle
3. What is alternate interior angel, how to identify alternate interior angle
4. What is “opposite angle” — sometimes also called “vertical angle”
5. What is axiom, what is theorem and what are the difference
6. Why the sum of the interior angle of a triangle is 180 degree
7. We went over several examples for angle calculation

The homework will be Ex24 from the workbook

Midterm information and jpeg for the midterm file

The statistics for the midterm is :
Highest 97
Lowest 20
Average 57
Median also happen to be 57
The most dense point range is 50 – 69 which is 33% of whole class.
70-79 for 4 people
80 – 100 for 2 people

Update from Mar 11 class

Dear Parents and Students

For today’s class, the homework is Ex 11, 12, 13 from workbook 6B
We did several topics
1. review the perimeter by using a composite shape
2. using the results from above 1 to distinguish precise from approximation
3. How to find the two dimension unit conversion rate, how and why it is different from one dimension unit conversion rate
4. How to find the area of any shape
5. How to find the area of square, rectangle, parallelogram, triangle, trapezoid and circle
6. While we introduced the formula of the area of the above shape, we introduced a mathematical thinking of transforming a problem into a problem that we know how to solve, we used this strategy to derive all the formula based on the formula for square which is used as the measuring unit. — with this thinking intuitively instilled , Hopefully students will get the idea of deduction/axiom system and will be natural when they are studying proof and geometry later

Update from Mar 4 class

Dear Parents
This class, we went over
1. perimeter and circumference is the same concept, only English word for different shape
2. Emphasis it is a one-dimension measurement, this emphasis will make students easier to comprehend when we do area and volume unit conversion
3. We went over how to measure perimeter of any shape
4. Also we went over how to reduce the work to get perimeter of some regular shape and CIRCLE
5. Last we worked on several composite shape perimeter

Homework is Ex9,10 and 11 from Workbook 6B

Update from Feb 26 class

Dear parents,

Today, we went over the first chapter of 6B book which is a review for fraction operation. Including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponent and order of operation. We did several problems in class for those techniques and some word problem related to reinforce the concept.

The rest of the book are all geometry and statistics, we will start geometry contents next week

Homework for this week is Exercise 5,6,7,8 of 6B workbook.

Some student have an Ipod, it is very easy to be tempted to play games on the ipod instead of concentrating on math in class. I tried to call students who do not pay attention in class to answer some math question.  I would suggest parents keep the ipod or other electronic game device for them before the class and give back to them after class.

Update from 02/12 class

Dear parents
Welcome to the new students and family.

I usually post to the teacher’s blog about what we covered after each class(within 1 day) and information about the homework will also be posted there as well as email to all the parents’ email address on file.

1. Last week, we went over the distance/speed/time problems one more time, from the class response, looks like the majority of the students understand the concept and should be able to do similar problems now

2. We also finished reviewing the final exam

3. The homework was posted at http://www.newtonchineseschool.org/teachers/gongxiaopeng/DistanceExtraPractice.pdf

4. Starting from next class, we are going to start Singapore Math 6B

5. Some parents asked if I can recommend any extra practice problems.
There are three different sets in the order of difficulty are:

a) “Primary Mathematics Extra Practice”, this is the same level as our workbook
b) Primary Mathematics Intensive Practice, this comes with 6A and 6B
c) Primary Mathematics Challenging Word Problems
All these can be ordered from www.singaporemath.com and there are US Edition and Standard Edition. our school use US Edition, the Standard Edition is for California standard and it is a little more difficult than the standard edition

About today’s final exam

Dear parents and students

We had the final exam today.  For those students that they can not make it today, You can download the test from

The total time for the test is 1.5 hours, format is close book, you can either scan it and email me or give it to me at next class.
The test has 150 points, the student only required to do 100 points problems, if they want to try more, the several problems that earned lowest points will be dropped.  For example, if one student did 120 points problem with 1 problem got 3 points and another problem got 1 points, the rest of problems tried all earned more than 3 points. then these two problems will be dropped from the calculation of the final score.
This way, student got some choice to make up on scores if they are just not good at one area.
         Thanks!

speed calculation file and info about final exam

Dear Parents and Students
Next week we will have a final exam. It will cover unit 1 to unit 5 and factor, multiple, fraction number operation.

This week, we did some speed calculation, I have uploaded the pdf to http://www.newtonchineseschool.org/teachers/gongxiaopeng/speedcal.pdf , if you went to go over, you are welcome to download and finish it — however speed calculation will NOT be on the final.

Thanks!

Update from Jan 22 class

Dear Parents and Students

This week, we had talked a little about speed calculation — This topic is only to introduce some fun part that is not in any regular school textbook. It is NOT going to be on the final test

Next week we will have a final exam which will cover all the topics we talked from the beginning to the end including fraction operation and factor, common factor, multiple and common multiple. Please advise your child review the materials

The text book we are going to use next Semester is going to be the 6B of Singapore Math.

Thanks and Happy New Year !

Update from Jan 16 class

Dear Parents and Students
This week,
1. we did the quiz on percentage
2. We talked about four types of speed, distance and time problems
calculate speed given distance and time
calculate distance given speed and time
calculate time given distance and speed
calculate time given distance and two speed coming toward each other
3. Homework for this week is Ex 27,28 and 29

Next week, we will talk about speed calculation for fun, also I will bring the math league book based on requests from parents, for some reason, the math league website did not do the trial for us ( several month ago, I sent out an email about that, they did not get it work out)
