Dear NCLS parents:

The registration for Fall 2013 semester starts on May 19, 2013 for the current students, and June 9, 2013 for the public. Many enhancements have been made to the NCLS registration system, the biggest one is enabling the online payment. During the implementation and testing phase, some emails were sent to parents with dates for testing, please ignore them. We are sorry for any confusion. Some parents entered data into the testing database, those data will be purged.  It has been a fruitful month for NCLS. Our students have had excellent performance in the New England Chinese Schools’ Chinese Speech Contest; Our in-school Math Contest has been a successful event, Students from all Math classes and some other classes have tested their Math skills through the contest, it was challenging and encouraging! Congratulations to the students and the teachers for their great achievements. We are very proud of them.

今年美东地区十几所中文学校的选手进行了精彩的中文演讲比赛，牛顿中文学校的唐若洋夺得国语高年级组（12-16岁）第一名，张欣然获得优胜奖。在中年级组（9-11岁）的比赛中，牛顿中校的朱天琪和李天悦分别获得分获第二名和第三名。低年龄组（6-8岁）牛顿中文学校学生唐牧阳获得优胜奖。

The 15th SAPA-NE annual conference and 15 yr milestone celebration 

England (SAPA-NE) Annual Conference will take place in MIT Sloan School of Management and Walker Memorial Morss Hall at MIT on May 25th, 2013 (8:00 am – 5:30 pm). Dr. Bruce Beutler, the 2011 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine will join the annual conference as one of the keynote speakers. Please reserve the date in your calendar for this exciting full day event.

The theme of the conference is “Scientific Innovation and Technological Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Drug R&D”. The conference will have four plenary sections with outstanding speakers and panelists, including Nobel Laureate, Biopharma industry senior executives, Chinese returnee entrepreneurs,
professors, and other experts, who will share their visions on scientific innovation, high-tech entrepreneurship,
and business development in US and emerging markets.

 第22屆全美青少年國畫書法比賽，4月27日經朱蓉、陸惠風、馬清雄、白謙慎、鍾耀星、高靜華、謝茵七位評委， 三小時的精挑細選反覆審查， 己由全部 323件作品中選出65件 金銀銅佳作等得獎作品， 將獲獎金獎狀。本次參賽作品來自﹔馬里蘭州、紐澤西州、加州、明尼蘇達州, 新罕普夏州, 德州, 華盛頓卅, 康州,及麻州等9州，  31所中文學校、書畫學苑及個人。 全部參賽作品， 包括國畫187件，書法136件， 將紐頓市僑教中心 (Chinese Culture Center, 90 Lincoln Street, Newton Highlands, MA.) 的大廳四週、前廳及前後走廊全部貼滿。主辦單位中華表演藝術基金會會長譚嘉陵表示， 今年的作品素質又明顯提昇，尤其是書法組，尺幅加大對聯增多，件件精彩，美不勝收。 評委雖都是專業行家， 法眼取捨之間也頗為難。很多學校己先行初賽，優勝者才送來參加。譚嘉陵並期望各校老師家長勉勵學生， 以參與為重，不要對是否得獎過份在意， 以發揚中華文化的精髓，學習傳統中國國畫及書法共勉之。65幅得獎作品經裝裱後，將在五月三十日前後放上網頁 www.ChinesePerformingArts.net. 明年仍是同一時間舉行，希望大家踴躍參加。

Congratulations to黄语红老师 and her students from the Children’s Chinese Folk Dance class! They won the second place award in the Sixth New England Chinese Dance Competition sponsored by the American Chinese Art Society on April 13.

Please do not remove the books from the bookshelves in the library.

Please do not turn on the computers or disconnect any of the cables and cords.

Please put the chairs back to the place after using them.

Please keep your voice down when playing cards.

Seminar in school

Topic: Parenting in America: A Cross-Cultural Perspective

This 90-minute presentation will offer an overview of the central values that have shaped key American institutions such as the family and education system. Participants will compare and contrast American beliefs, values and attitudes with those of their culture of origin. Parents will leave with a better understanding of why children growing up in America may be caught between two worlds, and how to meet the challenge of parenting in America.

Welcome back to school. Although we haven’t had school for two weeks, the NCLS families have been calling or sending emails to each other to communicate their thoughts and care during the trauma of violence. These days have reminded us the important bonds of community and friendship that we share at NCLS. Thank you for your efforts every day to contribute in a positive way to NCLS. 

We have learned that the information sessions being offered by the Justice Resource Institute Trauma Center for adults to learn more about trauma responses to the Marathon bombings in oneself, family members, children or friends. The details can be found on the website-

NCLS Math Competition 3:40-5:00pm

 我校数学竞赛定于四月二十八日3:40pm到5:00pm在学校举行。这次比赛，所有我校数学课的学生将自动参加，在学生所在的数学课上进行考试。此外还有46名没有注册数学课但是想参加数学竞赛的学生报名比赛，他们将分别在209，309， 313 和320教室参加考试，具体教室安排将分别Email给这些同学和家长。

The NCLS NewtonSERVES project starts at 1pm in school

 The project is led by the NCLS Board and is supported by PCC, Admin and the Support China Education Group. You are welcome to participate by joining the crew at 1pm in school.  They will work on some in-school tasks for Day School, such as raking the leaves in the yard and painting some interior walls. Community Service Hours will be granted to the student participants.

2013年牛顿中文学校数学竞赛将于4/28举行

我校数学竞赛定于四月二十八日3:40pm到5:00pm在学校举行。学校希望通过这次比赛掀起中文学校的数学热，让更多的学生在各种数学竞赛上拿到好成绩。这次比赛，所有我校数学课的学生将自动参加，在学生所在的数学课上进行考试。任课老师阅卷后，将根据比赛成绩和依照学生在英文学校的年级，排列名次。每个年级组的前三名将给予奖励。我们也欢迎并鼓励非数学课的其他在校学生参加这次竞赛，成绩和数学课学生一起记分。

2013年牛顿中文学校演讲比赛已经顺利结束。这次比赛取得了圆满的成功。在此我们对各位家长和老师给予的热情帮助及对所有学生的积极参赛表示衷心的感谢。参赛学生们在演讲台上不仅表现出了他们对中文的热爱，也表现出了他们的自信和坚持不懈的努力。因此，对所有参赛学生来讲，他们是不是拿到奖项并不重要，重要的是他们积极的参与和难得的经历，他们个个都是赢家！

The NCLS NewtonSERVES project on 4/28

NCLS is participating the 2013 NewtonSERVES event, and will work on some in-school tasks for Day School on Apr. 28 in the afternoon. We are calling for volunteers to work with us. The Support China Education 2013 team is going to China for a week

 Thanks to the support and help from the NCLS families and friends, the Support China Education project has been conducted very well this year. The team of twevle students led Nan Liang and Jieying Yao is going to China tomorrow, for the mission of helping the students in Cuozhen High School in Anhui. Let’s wish them a safe and success trip!

Homework and classroom behavior

As the second half of the semester is approaching, students usually need to be reminded about their school works and classroom behaviors. Our teachers are on top of that. Please join our teachers’ effort and reenforce it at home, by checking the homework during the weekdays, and stopping by the classrooms before/after classes to offer help and attention to the teachers.

Thank you for your help. Let’s work together to make NCLS the most efficient learning place for the students.

千呼万唤， 2013年海外华裔青少年“中国寻根之旅”夏令营终于出笼了。如大家所知，由敦煌文化服务中心协办的2012年海外华裔青少年“中国寻根之旅”夏令营在广州暨南大学取得了 很大的成功， 反应热烈。有鉴于此，今年本中心在名额上得到绝对的优先 。今年的团更多，内容更丰富。名额有限，加上其它地区在等待我们的剩余名额，希望各位马上行动，仔细阅读，比较参详，花多而不眼乱，一旦决定，从速报名。以下所列是各团的概况。有意者，请电邮info@SilkRoadCenter.org 索取报名表或从网址下载： www.SilkRoadCenter.org  *备注：所有机票自付。学生跟带队人员的比例约为10：1。 “附加随团费”根据具体情况 而定， 比如每个领队要带多少个学生，以及领队的普通级的机票价 。 选 择不随团队坐机的营员免“随团费”， 但必须预先报上行程。 所有营员（包括随团或不随团的）都可享受到达营地 的免费接送机。

Here finally come the 2013 “Tracing Your Roots” Summer Camps in China for Overseas Chinese-American Teenagers. As you might have known, Silk Road Center successfully assisted Guangzhou Jinan University in holding the 2012 “Tracing Your Roots” Summer Camps for Overseas Chinese-American Teenagers in Southern China. The feedbacks from the campers and the families were absolutely positive, which has made our camp programs even more popular this year. In 2013, Silk Road Center has the privilege to assist in making camp plans and to be notified first once the camp plans released. A lot of information will be provided, so read carefully before making your decision. Once a decision is made, please register right away before we transfer the spots to other organizations, since the openings and the time left are both limited. Don’t forget, the earlier we book air tickets, the better prices of tickets will be. Below is the general information for each camp.*Note:  All campers are responsible for their own airfare. The ratio of chaperone and camper is about 1 to 10. The fee added for chaperoned traveling depends on how many students each chaperone will lead and how much an air ticket will cost. Chaperoning fee is not applied for those who choose to travel without a chaperone; however, a copy of the travel itinerary must be submitted to Silk Road Center in advance.
All campers (of chaperoned or non-chaperoned) have pick-up/drop off service at the destination airport of the camp city, unless one waives. For a registration form, please email: info@SilkRoadCenter.org or download from our website at www.SilkRoadCenter.org.

The Chinese Speech Contest (Part One) went very well last Sunday. The student attendees have shown an extraordinary enthusiasm and strong capabillity in Chinese speaking. The Part Two will be conducted on the next school day April 7 during the second class period. You are welcome to come to the auditorium and watch, you will be inspired!

The application for the 2013-2014 school and PCC positions is due on April 1, 2013. Details can be found in our blog posted on March 1, 2013.

The 《中文》classes will have the mid-term reviews session on Sunday. Parents of the 《中文》classes, please print the related mid-term review material for the students via the links below, and let the students bring it to their classes on Sunday. The mid-term exams will be conducted on April 7. Sunday Mar. 30 won’t have school.

Speech Contest in the auditorium during the 2nd period

The NCLS 2013 Chinese Speech Contest will be conducted among three groups, starting at 3:35pm on Sunday Mar. 24 and Apr. 7. This year we have a total of 59 applicants attending the contest. Winners will be the candidates of Emcee for the future school events.

The first Newton Chinese Culture Festival last Saturday was very successful. NCLS has sponsored this event. We have also actively participated with performances and exhibitions.  The Mayor of Newton has attended the Festival.
