NCLS Weekly Newsletter 5/9/2012-Fall registration, Visa Service

Dear NCLS Parents:

We are going to start registration for Fall 2012. Below please find the details:

1. Registration Procedure for Fall 2012

NCLS Registration Procedure, Tuition and Book fees for 2012 Fall Term

Registration for Fall, 2012 will start on Saturday, May 12. There will be three stages for registration:

1. “Moving Up” Period: 12:00 AM, May 12, 2012 ― 11:59 PM, May 19, 2012, Registration only open to current in-school students.

(1) Leveled Classes (Chinese and Math)
All current in-school students can only register into the “moving up” classes for all of the Chinese classes and Math classes. For example, if you are currently in 1st grade class A, you can only register 2nd grade class A (neither other grade nor 2nd grade class B or C or D). If you are currently in Math 4, you can only register Math 5 (not other Math classes).

(2) Non Leveled Classes (all other classes except Chinese and Math)
The current students can register non-leveled classes during the “moving up” period, but only to the current classes they are taking this semester.
Our registration system will not allow you to register for classes other than the moving up one for the leveled classes or your current class for non-leveled classes and the school will guarantee your seat in the class for you during this period. All new classes, such as K-grade classes will be closed for the registration during this period.

Here are moving-up details:
All Chinese classes will move up accordingly;
All math classes will move up accordingly;
Wang Laoshi K-grade: 学前班 甲班-2 Language (K Grade -A2) moves up to 学前班 甲班 Language, K Grade – A
All other classes only open to current in-class students.

2. “Change Class” Period: 12:00 AM of May 20, 2012 ― 11:59 PM of May 27, 2012. Registration only opens to current in-school students.

All classes will open for registration and no seat will be held in any class. All new classes will also open for registration on “first come first serve” bases. All students can change their classes as long as the class you want to change to has vacancies. For example, if you are currently in 1st grade class A and you can change to 1st grade class B or C or D, you can do so during this period. All new classes will open to in-school students only.

This year, math classes from grade 4 to grade 7 will adopt new textbook system and there will be no overlaps between different levels. We are encouraging parents to consult with the current math class teacher to discuss which level you kid does better fit into. Please read the detail information for all level Math classes, before you decide which level you kid will take in the new semester. Please read “NCLS Math Program Syllabus” by click here.

Happy Chinese for Beginners, 2nd period class (《快乐汉语》 for students from non-Chinese-speaking background to learn at the beginners’ level)

 3. “Open Registration” Period: Start 12:00AM of May 28, 2012, registration opens to all students

During this period, the registration will open to anyone if there are vacancies in the classes.
All class schedules subject to change according to the availability of teachers and class rooms and the number of students registered in the class.
The teacher assignments are subject to change according to their availabilities and the school’s needs.

Tuition for the 2012-2013 School Year

Considering the current economical condition, the board has decided to keep the tuition of the 2012-2013 school year the same level as last school year.
Cost per semester: first class only: $150; second class only: $130; both classes: $250. This price applies to both children and adult classes.

Cost for senior classes per semester: $50.
The cost for textbooks is NOT included in the tuition.

Book Order:
The textbook for Chinese classes will not be covered in the tuition. Same as previous years, book fee will no longer to be optional and needed to be paid at the same time with tuition.
Following are the prices for textbooks for different class:

《中文》: $10 (including text book and homework books)
Maliping Chinese: $60
Kindergarten: $30
Math Grade 4-5: $24
Math Grade 6-7: $12

We encourage you to pay the tuition before the first day of school to guarantee the textbook for your children. For people decide to pay on site, your child will not get his/her book in the classroom. Instead, you will be issued a receipt upon making the payment and using that, you can get the textbook from cafeteria.

NCLS does allow you to return the textbook and following are the procedures:

1. Before the first day of school, one can change/cancel class with full refund (including both tuition and book fee).
2. At and after first day of school, we will only refund the tuition. No book fee is refunded in the registration system. To return the book, you need to bring the book to school administration. If the book is deemed to be in a good condition for resale (no damage, including not written, no wrinkle, smear…), you will receive refund on the book.
3. No book return will be allowed two weeks after the school is open; even the book is purchased at second week of the school

暑期即将来临，又到了大家计划回国，办理签证的旺季了。由于往年来波士顿为中文学校提供签证服务的华美签证服务公司今年因故不能来波士顿为大家办理签证服务，应本校广大家长的迫切要求，一个旨在方便家长，为剑桥中文学校社区服务的“剑桥签证服务社”临时组织起来了。从5月11日起开始代理签证业务，竭诚为大家服务。

签证服务办理时间：

5/11/2012：星期五晚上 7:30pm-9:00pm
5/12/2012: 星期六下午：1:00pm – 4:00 pm,
5/13/2012：星期天全天：10:00am – 4:00 pm,

签证服务办理地点：

收费标准：
剑桥中文学校教职员工学生及家长：$162.00 ($140 签证费+$22/服务费/人)；
校外：$166.00 ($140 签证费+$26/服务费/人)；
如申请一年以上多次往返，不另外增收费用；
如需要帮忙电脑填写表格，另加 $5.00电脑填写表格及打印费。
支票请开给：Cambridge Center for Chinese Culture，或：CCCC

取件时间：
暂定为交件三周以后即可取件。如果“剑桥签证服务社”运转速度加快，会及时通知申请人。

2011版《中华人民共和国签证申请表》填写注意事项

1. 中华人民共和国驻纽约总领馆仅接受从本馆网站下载并标明“驻纽约总领馆2011年6月制”的《中华人民共和国签证申请表》(Form V.2011A)。
2. 请参照《中华人民共和国签证申请表填写说明》各栏目说明，如实、逐项在电脑上填写。所有栏目均须填写，不能空白。如栏目内容不适用，请填写“无”。
3. 签证申请表填妥后，请用Letter纸清晰、完整打印。可双面打印。
4. 签证申请表（无论是本人填写还是他人代填）均须申请人本人签名。未满18周岁申请人，可由其父母/监护人代签。
5. 笔填申请表、填写不完整申请表、经涂改的申请表及其他版本申请表不予受理。

        It was very nice to see all the students, parents and faculty last Sunday after our spring break! 

        Some parents have asked about when the Fall registration will start. The school has been working on preparing for the new school year. We are targeting on opening the registration in about mid of May. Let’s stay tuned for more updates to come.

校刊“母亲节”为主题的征稿活动

“MAMA——没有国界的语言”，今年5月13日是母亲节（MOTHER‘S DAY） ，为弘扬中华民族“尊老”的优良传统，感谢天下无数母亲的平凡而伟大的恩情，本刊将于五月份出版一期专刊，从即日起推出以“母亲节”为主题的征稿活动。有关事项通知如下：

一、征稿时间：从即日起至4月30日
二、征稿对象：不限
三、征稿要求：

(一) 观点鲜明、主题突出、内容健康。

(二) 封面设计，文章，画作，摄影或者书法均可。文章须为中文，体裁不限。

第21屆全美青少年國畫書法比賽

4月21日經朱蓉、陸惠風、馬清雄、白謙慎、鍾耀星、阮圓、謝茵七位評委， 三小時的精挑細選反覆審查， 己由全部 337件作品中選出65件 金銀銅佳作等得獎作品， 將獲獎金獎狀。本次參賽作品來自﹔馬里蘭州、紐澤西州、加州、明尼蘇達州, 新罕普夏州, 德州, 華盛頓卅,及麻州等8州，  26所中文學校、書畫學苑及個人。 全部參賽作品， 包括國畫190件，書法147件， 將紐頓市僑教中心 (Chinese Culture Center, 90 Lincoln Street, Newton Highlands, MA. 617-965-8801, 9:30 am – 5 pm. Close on Monday.) 的大廳四週、前廳及前後走廊全部貼滿。主辦單位中華表演藝術基金會會長譚嘉陵表示， 今年的作品素質又明顯提昇，尤其是書法組，尺幅加大對聯增多，件件精彩，美不勝收。 評委雖都是專業行家， 法眼取捨之間也頗為難。很多學校己先行初賽，優勝者才送來參加。今年有很多新的學校參與，但也有些地方因教師的變動完全沒有送件。十分可惜，還需要多多宣揚及鼓勵。今年也依往例， 將入圍者名單公佈，鼓勵各地學生，百尺竿頭更進一步。譚嘉陵並期望各校老師家長勉勵學生， 以參與為重，不要對是否得獎過份在意， 以發揚中華文化的精髓，學習傳統中國國畫及書法共勉之。
 
本項展覽即日起到4月26日為止。 65幅得獎作品經裝裱後，將在牛頓中文學校等地展出。 並在五月三十日前後放上網頁 www.ChinesePerformingArts.net. 明年仍是同一時間舉行，希望大家踴躍參加。

NCLS Weekly Newsletter 4/18/2012

Dear NCLS Parents,

        Hope you and your family have been enjoying the spring break and the warm weather! Our school resumes on this Sunday. Welcome back!

        We have a few notes that need your attention:

        1. Check the kids’ homework at home

                  We have heard from teachers, especially teachers in higher grades, that the students tend to become busier with activities in the spring and start missing homework assignments here and there. Please remind our students on their Chinese homework and help them finishing it at home.

        2. Parking in Day School’s parking lot

                 Please be mindful and do not park your car in Day School’s parking lot during our school time on Sunday. The parking spots are reserved for teachers and staffs to ensure the smooth operation of the school. Thank you for your cooperation on this matter.

 1. NEC’s Jordan Hall DaXun Zhang 張達尋 Double Bass Solo Recital

中華表演藝術基金會將於2012年4月7日星期六晚上八點在紐英崙音樂學院喬登廳 (Jordan Hall) ，再次邀請低音大提琴演奏家張達尋演出一場絕無僅有的低音大提琴獨奏會。獨奏會的前一天晚上，4月6日星期五七點至九點，張達尋將在 Longy School of Music (33 Garden St. Cambridge, N-1 Recital Room) 舉行大師班，免費入場。是一次難得與大師面對提問的機會。4月7日晚演出曲目結合東西方樂曲; 有巴哈的大提琴組曲、浦提辛里(Bottesini) 的輓歌(Elegy) 、 陳剛的陽光照耀在塔什庫爾干、華彥鈞的二泉映月。節目中除了有由其日裔鋼琴博士太太柏木知子Tomoko Kashiwag為他鋼琴外，張達尋將以中國京胡演出一首中國曲樂 ”空山鳥語”。這將是一場非比循常、精彩可期的音樂會。

三藩市《古典音樂報》把張達尋譽為低音大提琴界中的馬友友，《華盛頓郵報》稱張達尋為低音大提琴的領航先鋒。張達尋出生在哈爾濱的一個音樂家庭。三歲開始學鋼琴，四歲學小提琴，七歲拉大提琴，從九歲的時候開始學習低音大提琴。十二歲進入北京中央音樂學院附中，十六歲考入美國密西根州藝術高中，隨後就讀印第安那大學音樂學院，攻讀藝術家文憑。並在四年級時受聘為芝加哥大學音樂學院聘低音大提琴教師。張達尋目前為德州大學奧斯汀分校低音大琴的教授。

張達尋在2001年參加國際低音大提琴協會獨奏比賽，獲成人組第一名，是贏得歷屆該獎項最年輕的選手。2002年，他奪取了在明尼蘇達舉辦的青年演奏家比賽的特等獎，並囊括相關的全部獎項，成為歷史上第一位獲得此獎的低音大提琴演奏家。2002年，又獲得了全美弦樂教師比赛冠軍。他還贏得了華盛頓表演藝術家協會獎。也贏得了La Jolla音樂協會獎、新英格蘭交響樂團獨奏家獎和Fergus獎。2003年，張達尋在美國紐約舉辦的國際青年藝術家器樂比賽中，榮獲第一名，為該獎項成立44年來首位以低音大提琴得獎的演奏家。並於2005年5月在甘迺迪中心舉辦了獨奏音樂會。華盛頓郵報的樂評譽之為「無人能出其右的低音大提琴冠軍。」張達尋以其富有震撼力的演奏贏得了音樂評論界和觀眾的好評。2006年，張達尋獲得中國金鐘獎，被列入中國人物年鑒。2007年張達尋獲頒Avery Fisher Career Grant，在該聲譽卓著獎項的歷史中，他是第二個以低音提琴獲獎的音樂家。

張達尋的演奏，滲有東方文化素質的特色，他把低音提琴的演奏水準和曲目，提高和發展到了一個嶄新美好的境地。他的演奏技巧輝煌，風格高雅，富於變化。音色沉穩、厚重、朝氣、優雅還不乏浪漫的色彩。他的演奏曲目含括古典樂曲、近代樂曲、中國音樂和探戈、爵士樂等。在音樂會中，他還經常演奏馬頭琴和軟弓京胡，為音樂會增添了新的看點。幾年來，張達尋在美國、加拿大、巴拿馬、日本、韓國、中國等地舉辦了百餘場個人獨奏音樂會，受到觀眾熱烈歡迎。同時還創作改編了大量受觀眾歡迎的低音大提琴獨奏曲，其中有許多中國樂曲，如二泉映月、良宵、賽馬、陽光照耀著塔什庫爾干、夜深沉等。張達尋將華彥鈞的「二泉映月」及陳剛的小提琴曲「陽光照耀在塔什庫爾干」; (是連小提琴家都視為極具挑戰性的曲子) 在低音大提琴上優美自然，行雲流水般的展示出, 真令人嘆為觀止，感動不已。張達尋的低音大提琴，像一道淡淡的彩虹，連接著中西音樂「安詳溫和」的韻律。使生活在兩個文化的音樂愛好者，能夠同時去體會兩個不同文化之間細緻的差異。

近年來，張達尋除繼續成為林肯中心的室內樂協會的一員、經常與美國各地樂團合作演出。2004年張達尋應邀加入馬友友絲綢之路音樂演出小組，在美國卡內基音樂廳，日本世博會、上海世界特奧會開幕式的演出等。他還和馬友友一起為日本NHK電视台錄製系列纪錄片原聲音樂。

張達尋以低音大提琴獨奏家的身份與東京、韓國、明尼蘇達、新英格蘭交響樂團等國際上許多交響樂團合作，演出了卡門幻想曲、波特西尼協奏曲、二泉映月、安德森協奏曲、庫塞維斯基協奏曲等樂曲。由他演奏的《流浪者之歌》、《卡門幻想曲》之類小提琴名曲，令人由衷讚歎。

日裔鋼琴家柏木知子Tomoko Kashiwagi 於美國印第安那大學取得鋼琴演奏碩士學位，於德州大學奧斯汀分校取得音樂藝術博士。她多年來致力於伴奏與室內樂的演出，目前於該校擔任鋼琴教師。長年隨著低音大琴家張達尋於國內外知名的地點演出。

NCLS Weekly Newsletter 3/29/2012

 Dear NCLS parents:

Spring is around the corner, we wish you and your family find time to enjoy the nice weather.

Since our last week’s newsletter, the usage of library facility has reduced significantly. We want to thank all the parents for your cooperation and your help to NCLS on maintaining a good relationship with Day Middle School.

We also need to remind the parent groups having activities in the library that, the water bottles within the center desk area are for NCLS teachers. Please do not take them without permission.

The yard sale for fundraising for China Education went very well. Many families have donated un-used toys, books and clothing. Thanks to all the parents for the support to this event.

2. Parking at Newton Chinese School

The parking spaces around Day Middle School are reserved for NCLS teachers and staffs. Recently, we have had increasing number of parents parking in the Day School parking lot. PCC is going to patrol the parking lot and write down the licence plate number for vehicles without NCLS parking permit. For vehicles with more than two violation, we are going to publish the licence plate numbers to all NCLS parents. 

3. Day School Facilities

Again, we would like to remind all NCLS parents that we are not allowed to use the Day School facility without permission. Last Sunday we observed several students and parents using the facility in the library. Please restrain yourself and your children from doing this in the future.

4. Water in library

The bottle water in the libray is only for NCLS teachers and faculties. No parent is allowed to take the bottle water from the library.

        The Spring term has been progressing smoothly; we have some news for you before this coming Sunday-

        1. 2012年牛顿中文学校演讲比赛 is taking place this Sunday at 3:40pm in our school auditorium. Teachers and the student participants from 4th to 10th grade have been actively preparing for this speech competition. Parents are welcome to attend this event and watch the competition. Please help us maintaining a supportive and quiet environment for this event in the auditorium if you are coming. Thank you.

        2. The mid-term exam for the《中文》classes is approaching us in about two weeks. The mid-term exam date is 3/25/2012. Please print the review materials related to your children’s Chinese classes, and let the kids bring it to school this Sunday, since the teachers will have the review session this week-

 Fundraising for NCLS Support Education Project
Craft Fair/Yard Sale

(All your support and contribution will be highly appreciated. For details about this project, please visit http://www.newtonchineseschool.org/chinaprojects.php).

How:

·     The event provides business booths for local business owners to advertise their business. The way to do it is that, each business owner like dentists, ophthalmologists, doctors, hair dressers, restaurant owners, artists, travel agents can buy a booth at a price of $100 a day and $200 two days. In the
booth, each business owner can advertise his/her business, set up posters, exhibit their products and introduce their services to the community during the yard sales. The people from the business take care of setting up a booth and cleaning up afterward.  The interested owners can contact Xiaomei Yu at myu119@mail.com and Hui Chen at shcchen@gmail.com for more details.

·    Donate all kinds of gently used, still valuable artistic toys, decorations, paintings,    crafts, paper cuts, sculptures, sweaters, wallets, scarf, pottery, electronics, clothes, shoes, children’s books, CDs, sportswear, kitchenware…;

Dear NCLS parents:

Today is International Women’s Day, NCLS wish all NLCS mothers to have a happy Women’s Day.

This month’s NCLS School Journal (http://www.newtonchineseschool.org/journal/current/2012-3.pdf)  spent several pages talking about NCLS teacher’s blog and we wish you to take a look when you have a chance. To help our students learn Chines better, we need parents and teachers work together and we hope teacher’s blog can serve a bridge between teacher and parent.

The daylight savings start on this Sunday Mar. 11. Please set the clocks ahead one hour for the beginning of the daylight saving time.
